Rural Health Clinics (RHC) are established to improve healthcare access in medically underserved communities.  All RHCs provide healthcare services for low income populations. This defined patient population has a disproportionate share of health disparities and social determinates challenging for healthcare practitioners.
California's vast geography is a significant challenge.
  • 85% of the state’s land mass is rural.
  • Rural CA is home to more than 5 million people, or 13.7% of the state’s population.
  • Nearly 1 out of every 60 Americans live in rural CA.

California’s Rural Health Clinics
  • There are 303 California RHCs as of January 2012
  • 24 Hospital Based
    • 163 Private Practices
    • 16 Community Based
  • There is at least one RHC in 43 (of 58) CA counties.

Could you elaborate on the specific healthcare challenges confronted by practitioners in these remote areas? Furthermore, how do Rural Health Clinics tackle prevalent health disparities and social determinants within the low-income patient demographic they serve?
